Compassion of Refrigerant R290 and R448a
- November 17, 2022
- Fonsum

R290 is classified as a hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerant, which is a natural, non-toxic refrigerant and the top alternative to hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants in cooler and freezer applications.
When comparing R290 to R448a, here are the key factors in why choose R290:
- R290 has a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) at 3 than R448a (GWP of 1300).
- R290 has higher Thermal Conductivity at 0.0676 than R448a (0.0469).
- R290 has no “glide” for stable temperature and R448a has 7° resulting in unpredictable temperature variations of 7°F.
- R290 has lower high-side compressor pressures which will lead to longer compressor life.
- R290 is a final solution whereas R448a is considered a transitory/temporary/interim refrigerant.
R290 is the Safe Solution for the Future
R290 is the preferred hydrocarbon alternative of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). It has been in use for decades by leading retail reach-in manufacturers and is in an estimated 2.5 million commercial units worldwide and in 2 billion household refrigerators and freezers.
Because it is such an efficient and effective refrigerant, there are between 3 and 5.29 ounces of R290 in any merchandiser whereas a typical merchandiser would require up to 16 ounces of HFC refrigerant. This is comparable to the amount of flammable material used in lighters or aerosol cans. There are no special storage, handling, or transportation requirements for merchandisers using R290. As with any refrigerant, maintenance and repairs should be done by a trained and qualified Refrigerant Technician.
