How to Distinguish R22 and R410a Air Conditioner Refrigerants

commonly used refrigerants for air conditioning

Refrigerant is the working medium of the air conditioning refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant achieves the purpose of refrigeration by absorbing heat when vaporized in the evaporator and releasing heat when condensing in the condenser. Freon is a widely used refrigerant. It has a wide variety. In order to facilitate memory, people have developed a set of simplified codes to represent various Freon refrigerants, such as R12, R22, R410A, and so on. Two different refrigerants, R22 and R410A, are commonly used in air conditioners. But many people don’t know the difference between these two refrigerants, and they don’t know which refrigerant to use. Let’s take a look at these two refrigerants together.

What are R22 and R410A?

The chemical name of R22 is difluoromonochloromethane, which is a member of the Freon family and belongs to the hydrochlorofluorocarbons. Most of the refrigerants we currently use are R22. Because this refrigerant is very harmful to the ozone layer, according to the Montreal Protocol, it will be phased out by 2020.

R410a refrigerant is a new type of refrigerant. R410A new refrigerant is composed of two azeotropic mixtures, mainly composed of hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon elements, with the characteristics of stability, non-toxicity, and superior performance. At the same time, because it does not contain chlorine, it will not react with ozone, that is, it will not destroy the ozone layer. In addition, the performance of air conditioners using new refrigerants will also be improved to a certain extent. R410A is an internationally recognized refrigerant used to replace R22 so far and has been popularized in Europe, America, Japan, and other countries.

Why use R410A instead of R22

1. The r410a refrigerant is of low toxicity and shows no combustion propagation.

2. The ozone layer destruction coefficient of r410a refrigerant is 0, and the ozone layer destruction coefficient of R22 is 0.05.

3. When R410A is used, the total heat transfer characteristic of the system is larger than that of R22, so the system efficiency can be improved and the heat transfer area of the heat exchanger can be reduced.

The R410A and R22 have the following different characteristics:

1. R410A is a refrigerant mixed with HFC-32 (R32) and HFC-125 in a weight ratio of 50% each and is a near-azeotropic mixed refrigerant. And R22 is a single substance refrigerant.

2. The operating pressure of R410A is about 50~70% higher than that of R22.

3. The vapor density of R410A is higher than that of R22. For systems of the same capacity, the required refrigerant mass flow rate is the same. Because the gas piping is the same diameter, the steam flow rate of R410A is about 30% slower than that of R22.

Through the above introduction, I believe that everyone knows that the use of R410A is much better than the air conditioner using R22 as the refrigerant, so it is recommended that consumers buy an air conditioner using R410A as the refrigerant, not only to enjoy a more comfortable air-conditioning environment, without damaging the environment. At present, most of the air conditioners of internationally renowned brands use R410A as the refrigerant. In the future, it is believed that the market prospect of some air conditioners using R410A refrigerant will become broader and broader.
